Restrictions on reports

Section 49 of the 1933 Act says that reports of proceedings at a youth court must not contain :

  • The name, address, or school, or any particulars leading to the identification of any child or young person involved in the proceedings as a defendant or witness.

  • Any photograph of, or including, any such juvenile.

Reporters need to be careful not to include in a youth court story anything that could identify a juvenile.   There is nothing to stop adults concerned in youth court proceedings being named, provided this does not identify a juvenile. There is a complete ban on naming the juvenile’s school.
