Copyright and the Internet

Is material on the Internet protected by copyright?

Yes. Under UK law copyright material sent over the Internet or stored on web servers is protected in the same way as material in other media.

Enforcement of copyright on web sites

When you publish on-line, it is a good idea to mark each page with the international © mark followed by the name of the copyright owner and year of publication. You should also include information on your web site about the extent to which you allow content to be used without permission. It is worth noting that although on-line material is protected by copyright, web sites are accessible from all over the world and you would need to enforce copyright under the legal framework of the countries where infringement occurs.
