Meaning of words

Multiple meanings can be dangerous as a particular inference could be made by someone with specialised knowledge. Here, the stance of the reasonable person is used to see if it is possible to read between the lines.

Juxtaposition

A statement can be made, which out of context can seem to be entirely innocent. However, another article placed next to it can give an entirely different tone.

Bane & Antidote

This is almost the opposite of the above where a statement could be construed as defamatory if taken on their own. However, a juxtaposed article or statement can remove the poison.

Innuendo

This is where a statement can become defamatory to people with a specialised  knowledge of a subject.

New & Old Standards

This is where meanings of words change with the years, or where a taboo subject becomes acceptable. Also the converse applies. Therefore a statement can or cannot be taken as defamatory depending on the current public attitudes.
