Privilege

This is where freedom of speech is protected in areas where there is a public interest issue to be addressed. Privilege gives the journalist a way to report on proceedings, even when defamatory statements are made… even if they are untrue. Journalists usually use statutory privilege rather than the common law alternative.

Two kinds of privilege exist: absolute and qualified.
