Keeping a record

Broadcasters must keep recordings of transmitted material in case of a libel action being brought against them. The Radio Authority recommends that tapes are kept for a minimum of 42 days. In practice, many keep them for three months to a year. The ITC has no recommendation for a time period. However, the Broadcasting Advertisements Clearance Centre keeps commercials for three months.
